Hi I’m opening a pet store that just sells supplies-no puppies (except when mine visit, of course.) or other animals besides rescues coming in. What supplies do other pet stores seem to be lacking?

special collars for particular breeds (like greyhounds).
Go upscale - there’s a lot of money there, even in this economy.

Seeing that other people mention collars, I should point out that there is a whole cottage industry of specialized collars and it is almost entirely online. Some searching and emails should put you in touch with viable vendors.

bigger collars that have renforced holes (my dog has a tendency of ’snapping’ them) and has a neck size of 28", so it’s hard to find a good collar that will fit him and not break! (or have ugly studs or something on it)

A varity of stuff most pet stores only have one or two brands you need a whole bunch but don’t buy/ sell any of the Hartz brand protects especially the ones that the animals eat ( medicine , flea prevention etc.) this is because it has killed 2 of my friends dogs and the vet told me they have seen many cases where a dog is ill because of their product. and the training treats made by the brand pup - erroni is great not the long sticks but the little one are the best training treats ever. One of the best pet stores is all pets club so visit their store online they sell practically everything although they do sell puppies too (which are kept in huge rooms and are always healthy all pets club has personol vet that is on duty all day)

a non chewable leashes, more dog toys, more options for dog shampoos, healthy treats, healthy food at a cheaper price(no crap food that alot of pet stores sell),clothes that fit all sizes of breeds.

Collars and leashes that are unique and actually attractive. I would like that. I would also like quirky treats/toys for an animal. Something they would use and that is safe and healthy but is different. Also, you should carry normal things like food, bowls, cages, bedding, pet cleaning supplies, etc.
For the cages, bedding, and bowls I wouldn’t mind seeing something unique, either. It seems every pet store you go to has approximately the same things/style. I mea
n, puppy paw prints on a bowl? It’s cute, but i’ve seen it.
Plus, I agree with ^

I have looked in several pet stores and none of them carried any cute collars for larger breeds. My lab had collars with paw prints, etc. when he was small, but I can’t find anything like that in his size now.

i am in australia but hopefully this is still helpful
i’d love to see:
-more variety of collar designs, right up to big dog sizes.
-good quality pet food, amd i’m not just talking about the super commercialised stuff. some of the best quality dog foods are produced locally for rural areas and are sold in bulk… like farm foods. not foods that are full of cheap fillers
-books on all sorts of pet-related things
-great quality toys ( not sure if you have these in the u.s. but do some research on ‘tuffy’ toys) and a big varity of toys
-pro-active advertising of the fact that you DO NOT sell or endorse backyard breeders or puppy mills by NOT selling puppies etc in your store. i think your store would gain alot of positive feedback and in return great custom for showing your community that you ONLY support registered breeders and animal adoption shelters.
good luck
