im getting a betta what are some pet supplies i should have
1x 5-10 gallon tank
1x soft filter such as a sponge filter or trickle filter
1x heater suitable for the volume
soft decor of choice - no sharp decor, no plastic plants, nothing the fish can get stuck in
1x master liquid water test kit
1x water syphon
2x buckets for water changes
1x thermometer
1x pack high quality betta food
And research on how to do the nitrogen cycle, which takes 2-6 weeks. You can never buy fish and tank at the same time! A lot of stores refuse to sell that anyway.
A Betta has the same basic needs as any other tropical fish, they need a filtered tank that has completed the nitrogen cycle and gets weekly partial water changes.

1. a tank around 1 gallons is great although the bigger the better!

2. bettas are tropical fish and so prefer a water temprature of 75-80F. You should buy a heater to maintain this temp. but if your house stays around 70F and above, then a heater isn’t needed.
3. thermometer- helps makes sure the temperatures are not too wild. too cold and your better would not do so well and can get sick and lethargic
4. water conditioner- a must for all fish. it gets rid of the chlorine and harmful metals in your tap water.
5. food- im sure he’ll be quite hungry once he gets home!
6. and finally- optional, but a plant or someplace for him to hide in and feel at home in his new tank
Good luck!

catx gave a good answer, as always, but left out a couple of things. You also need a water conditioner to make the water safe for your fish.
The very first thing you need, before you buy anything else, are some books on basic aquarium keeping, and at least one on keeping Bettas. A hood for your tank is a very good idea, Bettas are amazing jumpers!
Keeping Bettas can be a very rewarding experience, when done properly. Bettas have so much personality, you’ll be surprised. Don’t stick him in an out-of-the-way corner and ignore him. Bettas don’t care about the company of other fish, but do like to interact with their human, once they get to know you. Once they are accustomed to their environment, they also enjoy watching the goings on outside their tank. They are extremely intelligent and curious fish.
A happy, healthy Betta should look bright and alert. He should swim around and be interested in what’s going on. If he has his fins clamped against his body, his fins appear raggedy-looking, his color is faded, or he lies around on the bottom of his tank, or you notice anything else out of the norm, something is wrong. Make sure all tank equipment is functioning properly, then test your water. There are different treatments for different problems. Make friends with the people at your local fish store. They usually have a wealth of information, and more often than not, will be happy to help you. I have even taken my fish in to them for a diagnosis before!
A healthy, well-cared-for Betta should live at least 5 years, so it is well worthwhile to invest in the research and the proper habitat to help your new little friend have the best life possible!
