He has a pretty bad flea allergy and his neck and back is full of scabs. My thoughts were that the Frontline will take the fleas away and the scabs will heal, but will it be safe to put frontline plus on his neck with all this scabs there? If not, what can I do to get rid of the scabs so I can start treating him for the fleas?
Yes, go ahead. He’s going to continue to scratch and make himself worse if you don’t. I get a lot of cats that are terribly flea bitten and always put Advantage on them immediately. These products get distributed through the fur, and don’t really involve the skin. I would suggest though putting it on the back of his head, rather than between the shoulder blades as that will probably avoid the scabbed areas. If he’s got flea bites, you might want to consider taking a stool sample to the vet to have it checked for tapeworm as well.
a 8 pound puppy mixed with a 60 pound pack of frontline plus. is there an overdose?
yes it would be way to much for your puppy you need to call a vet…
my dog has open wounds due to scratching. she has a lot of open wounds. i was wondering if is it safe to use frontline plus because i think i need to get rid of her tick and fleas.
if your dog already has ticks and fleas you need to take her to the vet immediatly she could get diseases from the ticks.
frontline is for the prevention of fleas and ticks and it works well but it wont get rid of ticks that are already there.
your vet should give you a cream to get rid of the fleas and ticks
good luck!
I have a 9 week old puppy and i want to know how old does she have to be to use frontline plus for dogs?
They have frontline for smaller dogs. However, from my experience, and from speaking to vets you should wait until 12 weeks. You can in the meantime give them a bath with "Dawn" dishsoap. This is a healthier way to go to prevent fleas on your puppy. It is an old-fashioned trick that works and is not dangerous. I would not use frontline on the puppy yet for at least another 3 weeks.
I know that the plus has the IGR (insect growth regulator) in it that prevents the fleas eggs from being able to hatch. But if both frontline products kill on contact then is there any sense in using the plus? How can the plus stop the eggs from hatching if the parents are killed on contact how do the eggs get laid? Thanks
there could be eggs already. Meaning when you treat your dog, it kills the adults but the adults may have laid eggs before you treated the dog. So it takes care of both
I’ve put frontline plus on my dog, and he’s still scratching like a maniac. I know it takes a while to take affect, but its seems to have gotten worse from when he didn’t have it. he can’t even sleep peacefully now! help!
yes, he has fleas, i’ve seen them running around on his fur.
It takes about 18-24 hours for Frontline to work. If he’s scratching worse, and it’s been longer than that, he obviously has something else bothering him. It could be allergies, or it could be a reaction to the Frontline.
how often should i apply frontline plus. my dog is about 60 lbs. i put some on her tonight and just wondering when i should use it again….thanx for everyones help
You should use it once a month. I put all my dogs Frontline on ever first of the month along with heartguard.
If fleas become an issue, you can use Frontline every three weeks. That info came from the drug guy who peddles the stuff at the clinic along with other new products.
I treated my dogs with frontline plus on the 15th of September. I didn’t apply it correctly (lost directions). Instead of putting a spot of Frontline on them I rubbed it in a bit. Anyway they are still jumping with fleas. I am wondering if it is safe to go ahead and retreat or if I should just try using flea shampoo until the correct date. I know the obvious is to call the vet I will do that tomorrow but curosity sake of what other people think as well. Thanks.
Rubbing it in would not affect the way it works, and you should NOT treat them again before the recommended time (one month). You NEED to treat the environment. Fleas lay up to 50 eggs each day, and the eggs fall off the dog and into the environment (their bedding, your carpet, etc.). So you have to treat your HOUSE too or you’ll never get rid of them.

I just gave him some about 10 days ago and hes starting to itch and scratch at his neck again and lick himself constantly.I think he might have fleas or is he getting a reaction to the frontline? Should i give him more? Hes only 8 pounds.
If he still has fleas you will be able to see them on him. It should already start working and they should have stopped crawling and jumping. He could be allergic, but I doubt it. Are you positive it was frontline plus? Either way it may not be fleas. If he is licking his paws and such he could have allergies. I’m assuming he is an outdoor indoor cat. Don’t give him anymore for now.
Remember with fleas you must treat the enviroment as well. Treat your house and vacuum everyday.
Then try switching to Revolution for cats it is a bit more pricy, but it works the best. Plus it has heartworm preventative in it!
Wait until next time and try Revolution, Frontline doesn’t work as well on cats!
